You’re good at what you do in your business – there is no doubt about that.

But as your business grows, your role shifts; if you’re not prepared for it, it can catch you off guard. The role of “leader” doesn’t come naturally to everyone, but the skills that leadership requires are just like any other in that they can be TAUGHT, NURTURED, and DEVELOPED!

And I’m here to talk about exactly what those skills are.

Fluid Leadership

“Fluid leadership” is where it all starts. This concept is a modern, tried-and-true method proven to guide your leadership within your company and facilitate lucrative and seamless growth.  As a business coach, I have witnessed three specific approaches to leadership under this category. And, what I’ve learned in my experience, is that you need a delicate balance of all three of them to be successful.

1. Leading from the front.

Leading from the front

Leading from the front requires you to clearly and concisely communicate your goals for the business. Your team needs to understand your vision, strategy, and values…and the only person who can do that properly is YOU.

Using this approach, you are also considered the guardian. This means you are responsible for defending boundaries and setting expectations within your business, which involves asking the tough questions such as:

  • What does a good job look like?
  • What happens when someone fails at their job?
  • What happens when they negatively disrupt the workplace?

Answering these questions and using them to define the business’s guiding principles upfront will quickly teach your team the rules they need to play by.

Lastly, leading from the front also means being the person your team can turn to during a crisis. If you can respond with a delicate balance of honesty, optimism, and, of course, strategy, you will instill the confidence your team needs to weather any storm.

2. Leading from the middle.

Leading from the middle

Taking on a leadership role from “the middle” also means taking on the role of mentor and teacher. Not only do you need to be inclusive, collaborative, and encouraging, but you also need to nurture the capabilities of your team members so that they feel empowered and motivated to take on more responsibilities when you’re not around.

All in all, leading from the middle means working alongside your team and motivating them in the ways that count. In doing so, your team should be 100% supported and appreciated by you.

3. Leading from behind.

Leading From Behind

Leading from behind essentially means being the constant force that pushes your employees to do their best. You are their loudest cheerleader, biggest supporter, and number one fan. You encourage them in their losses and celebrate their wins.

What happens when you celebrate the wins of a team member?

They feel:

  • appreciated
  • confident that they’ve contributed something positive
  • valued
  • satisfied with their work

This is also a highly effective method of showing the rest of your team what you are looking for from them. Humans are naturally competitive and hungry for recognition (even when they don’t want to admit it), so seeing other teammates being celebrated for their achievements will push them to perform better so they can receive the same.

Celebrate people not only professionally but personally as well!

Bind your employees to your business and you!

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, a leader is not just one thing, one way, one time. A leader is many things, from various approaches and at different times. And the key is to learn how to balance them all. Master the art of leading from the front, middle, and behind; you’ll get your team (and your business!) accomplishing things you never thought possible.
